Everybody knows that weddings don’t come cheap. Most of us have to save up or get help from family and relatives to be able to afford to host the celebration.
Not these five couples… these weddings are so expensive that they will make your own seem like peanuts – keep reading for five of the most expensive weddings in history.
Wayne Rooney & Coleen McLaoughlin
One of the highest paid footballers ever, Wayne Rooney, could afford to marry Coleen in extremely lavish circumstances. It was held in Italy in June 2008, with a list of costs that is endless! It included 5 private jets to Genoa, and a ball on a $120-million yacht. Not to mention the ceremony in a 17th century villa and the reception at a medieval abbey in Portofino.
Pre-wedding celebrations took a big chunk out of the wedding bill too; with £200.000 spent on booking Coleen’s favourite band Westlife, £200.000 on the bride’s dress, £400.000 on the couple’s stag and hen dos and £85.000 on 6 return trips to New York for Coleen and her mother’s dress fittings. The list goes on but you get the point.

Prince William & Kate Middleton
This Royal wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in April 2011, we’re sure it’s still fresh in your memory. The ceremony was viewed by tens of millions around the world, including one million people who lined the streets between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.
The guest list had 1,900 names on it, over $800.000 was spent on flowers and the wedding cake came to a respectable $80.000. Most noteworthy was the cost spent on security and transport with the costs met by Her Majesty’s British treasury.
Wedding bill: $34m (almost as much as Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s.)

Who could forget the wedding of a century that took place on 29 July 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London? Maybe you watched it on TV with 750 million other viewers. Or waited patiently to catch a glimpse of Diana’s processions with 2 million other spectators?
There were 3,500 people in the congregation at the cathedral, but only 120 guests attended the wedding dinner at Buckingham Palace after the ceremony. Most noteworthy, Diana’s famous ivory taffeta and antique lace dress was valued at a modest £9.000 (£29,208 as of 2014).

When the daughter of India’s richest man married a London banker in 2005 there were fireworks, literally, and they were under the Eiffel Tower. In additionally, the highlight of the wedding reception was a performance by pop star Kylie Minogue amidst the fireworks.
The celebrations started with an engagement ceremony held at the Palace of Versailles, followed by a dinner prepared by chefs flown in from India. The wedding was held at the 17th century Chateau Vaux le Vicomte. Oh, and did we mention that the invitations were sent in a silver box that held plane tickets and a room reservation at a 5-star Paris hotel. We would’ve loved to take a closer look at those silver boxes!

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum & Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum
This wedding takes expensive weddings to a whole new level. An estimated $100, 000, 000 (!) was spent on the wedding celebrations when Sheikh Mohammed Rashid, constitutional monarch of Dubai, married his 17-year old first cousin Hind Bint Maktoum in 1979.
The wedding was so big that a stadium was built to seat 20,000 people. It became Dubai’s first major public event, and became something of a national festival. The wedding entertainment consisted of horse and camel riding shows and an aerobatics display by the Dubai Air Force.
