The wedding season is nearly upon us. If you’re lucky enough to have been invited to one (or several) of these happy occasions then you will most likely be facing the problem of choosing a gift for the excited couple.
Many couples will have a wedding registry list (life saver) but even if you decide to buy something from the list you must consider:
Should I stick to the registry?
The wedding couple has set up a registry for a reason, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t appreciate a gift that’s not on the list. See it as a guideline. It tells you what the couple wants or needs. Buy something off the list only if you feel comfortable with it.
How much should I spend?
As a general rule you should spend what you think is appropriate to your relationship with the couple. If it’s your best friend you’ll probably want to spend more than you would on a co-worker.
I can’t afford the gift I’d like to give
You’ve come up with a great idea, but it’s a little too pricey for you to afford on your own. Why not get together with a group of friends or relatives and all chip in? According to a survey by theknot.com the most appreciated gifts were, surprise, the bigger gifts.
I don’t want to buy a gift from the registry
As mentioned, the registry is not an obligation, but more of a suggestion of what the couple likes. So if you prefer not to restrict yourself to the list, we still recommend you take a look so you know what kind of items your couple are looking for.
It’s a destination wedding
If attending the wedding means you have to spend hundreds on travel and accommodation it is acceptable (in most cases) not to splurge on an expensive gift. You might very possibly even get away with not buying anything at all.
When should I give the gift?
According to etiquette you shouldn’t bring the gift to the reception, but ship it either when you receive the invitation or within a year (but ideally within 2 months) after the occasion. Still, you’ll see gift tables at most weddings, so use your own judgement and decide whether it’s appropriate or not to take the gift with you to the wedding.
Can I give money?
Money is a popular gift, but it can be tricky to decide how much is suitable to give. Why not team up with a bunch of friends, the couple wont know how much you’ve exactly contributed. Make the gift more interesting by creating a money tree. Or even origami made out of money instead of a boring cheque.
